About The Neighborhood
Southwest Center City is the neighborhood bounded by South Street, Broad Street, Washington Avenue, and The Schuylkill River. It’s an area sometimes called South of South or Graduate Hospital. Regardless of what we call our neighborhood we hope you call it home for your family or business.
We are a diverse and vibrant community of people all living in this neighborhood of affordable two- and three-story homes as well as more upscale three-and four-story row homes. Together we enjoy our tree-lined streets brimming with colorful window boxes, some of the best independent cafes, bustling bars, excellent gastropubs, ethnic restaurants, and relaxing Irish pubs — and all the other great benefits of one of Philadelphia’s finest neighborhoods.
We are just steps away from many of the amenities that make Philadelphia a world class city: a short walk to the shopping and restaurants of Rittenhouse Square, the culture and arts on Avenue of the Arts, the beautiful Schuylkill River Park and Trail where you can walk, bike, or jog to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Check out South Street for the never-ending display of youth culture, fun bars, and crazy shops. The University of Pennsylvania is right across the South Street bridge to the west, and just a short stroll to the east is The Italian Market where the lively atmosphere is free.
SWCC is growing at an amazing pace. Everywhere you look, new row homes, new corner cafes, restaurants, and bars are adding to the amenities that have long characterized this neighborhood — including our beautiful old churches, the Marian Anderson Recreation Center, and the historic Christian Street YMCA. We also have nearby farmers markets: at the Julian Abele Park, and nearby at Fitler Square and Rittenhouse Square.
All of these things make Southwest Center City a great place to live and work, but most of all it’s the great people who live here. If you are already a resident or business owner in the SOSNA area, we hope you will participate in our community events and the continual improvements we are making.
