Strategic Plan

Project Name: South of South Neighborhood Association (SOSNA) 5 Year Strategic Plan

Project Background:
South of South Neighborhood… The best of all worlds: Vibrant, culturally rich, historic, growing and not yet near capacity, ideally located, and diverse! Upwards of 13,000 people call the area bounded by Washington Ave, Broad Street, South Street, and the Schuylkill River home. Reinvestment in this wonderful part of Philadelphia has prompted many changes in this community. Over the past 9 years, the neighborhood association (SOSNA), primarily fueled by grant funding, has become an important source of information and advocacy for its residents. Due to many successes in neighborhood improvement, SOSNA is increasingly being recognized as THE model for other Philadelphia neighborhoods undergoing rapid change.Incredible success creates incredible responsibility.

The Challenge
Fueled by several upcoming challenges (expiry of grant funding, increased rent in existing location, potential staffing changes), SOSNA is now prepared to reevaluate its value proposition to the community and consciously craft what roles the neighborhood association will play going forward.

The Strategic Plan
In late 2013, the SOSNA Board launched the SOSNA Strategic Planning effort. This multi-phased plan is poised to:

  • engage the larger constituent groups in the neighborhood (Long time residents, Shorter term residents, Churches, Schools, Businesses, and Builders) to assess the most important functions provided by the neighborhood association,
  • appropriately scale these critical functions to match anticipated neighborhood growth over the next 5 years
  • rewrite the SOSNA by-laws to address these changes, and
  • create a sustainable financial and resource plan to support SOSNA over the next 5 years.

SOSNA is a volunteer organization supported by one full time employee. The chronology of neighborhood history has been captured in the newly published “Evergreens” by Andrew Dalzell.

Phase 1 Goal
Phase 1 of the plan began on January 9 and will end in March 2014. SOSNA is partnering with Drexel university business school students through the Non-Profit Business Consulting course to help create, distribute and aggregate results of a community poll. The core team includes 5 Drexel business students (Kento, Vikram, Dominick, Greg, & Yana), 6 community partners, and 5 SOSNA board members. The planned deliverables are:

Between February 11 and February 25, the Drexel students and Strategic Planning Committee will be approaching neighborhood residents and businesses in a door to door campaign to hear you. Please complete the short survey by March 3rd for a chance to win prizes and to be heard! SHARE YOUR VOICE | IMPACT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD!

Since the collection of the Strategic Palnning Survey the Strategic Planning Committee has been hard at work synthesizing data and compiling the responses received from our community. Input from our neighbors, volunteers, committee members and supports has shaped the 5-year strategic plan outlined below. The strategic plan was presented at the April 8, 2015 SOSNA General Meeting, there we welcomed comments and questions from the SOSNA membership. If you'd like to read through the full plan in PDF form, please click here.
