Last night, the SOSNA Clean & Green Committee welcomed Tiffany Ledesma-Groll from the Philadelphia Water Department to introduce Rain Check, a new cost-sharing program being piloted in the SOSNA neighborhood with the goal of improving residential stormwater management.  Details on the program previously reported here. SOSNA is responsible for getting up to 35 households registered for this pilot program.  After last night, only 17 13 slots remain

To register to participate in Rain Check, please email andrewd AT southofsouth DOT org with your name, address, email and phone number by the March 15 Registration Deadline. Registrations are received at a first come, first serve basis so register now!

Ms. Ledesma-Groll's powerpoint presentation from the meeting is available for download below, and the video she showed of "green tools" being installed in Cobbs Creek can be seen here.

We are thrilled to announce that thanks to the generosity of dozens of neighbors, our community is getting two new Big Bellies installed early in 2012! 16th and Christian Streets will be installed first, and hopefully soon thereafter 22nd and Carpenter Street. The latter requires coordination with City of Philadelphia officials regarding the exact placement with an eye towards the Park's forthcoming renovations. We appreciate your patience in advance.

Come help plan the launch of Phase III at the next Clean & Green meeting, Tuesday January 17 at 7 PM at the SOSNA office.

A big thank you to all who donated - during the "End of Year Matching Challenge" we received donations from 45 unique individuals ranging from $5 to $300 totaling $2,395. Not a bad haul for one month! Over the entirety of the Phase II campaign (which kicked off on May 3), we raised $4,500 from over 75 unique individual donors.

SOSNA salutes the following individuals, businesses and organizations for supporting Phase II of the Big Belly Campaign and for helping to make this a cleaner neighborhood for all:

Monday, December 12, 2011 - 8:05pm

2400 South Street appears before the Zoning Board of Adjustment for final review at a special hearing Wednesday December 14 at 1 PM (1515 Arch Street, 18th Floor).  SOSNA urges all neighbors with opinions on this project - whether for or against - to attend this hearing.  Please remember to fill out a white appearance slip upon arrival at the hearing room to uphold your legal right to appeal the ZBA's decision if you so choose, and at the very least to be notified by mail of that decision once it is rendered.

What follows is a chronology of events charting SOSNA's involvement with this project in our ongoing efforts to be open, transparent and clear about our role in development. (Italics = public meetings)

Friday, December 2, 2011 - 11:56am

We launched Phase II of the Big Belly Campaign on May 4th of this year and we want to achieve our goal of installing two new Big Bellies (at 16th and Christian and Julian Abele Park, 22nd and Carpenter) by the end of 2011. Including both checks and online donations, we've raised $2,000.00 thus far. We're also in talks with a potential "angel" investor willing to finance an entire unit. So, assuming that comes through, we need to raise $2,500 before December 31st, 2011.

Here's how we'll do it: you help us raise $1,250.00 and SOSNA will match! We've already got the money set aside ready to be used; all we need is your support.

Please donate and lets make this the cleanest neighborhood in the city!  As Keep America Beautiful informs us, litter begets litter and the availability of public trash and recycling receptacles impact someone's decision to litter significantly.

A big thank you to all who have supported this program so far! Remember, since SOSNA is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit, a portion, or all, of your donation may be tax deductible (please consult your tax advisor), and your name will be enshrined on the side of the new Big Belly units!

Please do not take any more mulch from behind 1801 Christian Street.  The remainder of the supply is being used for the November 19, 2011 Tree Planting.  Mulch is important when planting new street trees to provide nutrients and preventing weeds from growing around the tree.  Thanks!

Monday, October 24, 2011 - 12:19pm

Need free mulch for your garden or tree pit? Or need some sod for compost?  Please help yourself to the free mulch and sod in the REAR YARD of 1801 Christian Street.  These materials have only seen ten-days of use as part of the Better Blocks Philly project.  Thanks for helping us re-use these materials around the neighborhood!

Saturday, October 22, 2011 - 9:53am

We want your opinions on Better Blocks Philly. Please complete the online survey and tell us what you thought of the project.

As the summer enters its second half, SOSNA would like to take this opportunity to remind and encourage neighbors to throw a block party.  These events take very little work to legalize, and are a wonderful opportunity to bring your neighbors together for the sole purpose of having fun.

Block Party applications can be downloaded here or at the link below.
