At the SOSNA General Membership last week, Kevin Dow from the Department of Commerce rightly stressed the importance of neighborhood planning documents.  They are the product of long public processes and synthesize this extensive community input with planning expertise to provide roadmaps for the neighborhood's stability and growth.  SOSNA's Board of Directors and Initiatives are guided by these documents.  At your leisure, we invite and encourage you to peruse the following documents for our neighborhood, available for download from the SOSNA website. Copies are also available at the SOSNA Office, 1901 Christian Street:

GLOBAL GREEN NEIGHBORHOOD WORKSHOP- Tues. June 19-21, 2012
Volunteers Needed!
The City of Philadelphia and the Mayor's Office of Sustainability recently received a grant to bring national experts to Graduate Hospital/Southwest Center City this summer for a three-day intensive consultation focused on green neighborhood design and planning. Global Green, a national non-profit organization, will be providing their expertise to evaluate Southwest Center City's existing pattern of development, recognize existing positive qualities, consult with community stakeholders, host a public workshop, and identify opportunities to improve our neighborhood's sustainability. Recommendations for both physical and policy changes will be presented at the end of the team's visit.

Global Green's recommendations are based on the LEED for Neighborhood Development standard, which provides a nationally recognized method for creating neighborhoods that are walkable, bikeable, resource-efficient, and equitable. A basic introduction to the LEED-ND system is available here: http://www.nrdc.org/cities/smartgrowth/files/citizens_guide_LEED-ND.pdf

Volunteers are needed to help organize the public workshop and community meetings!
Please contact Andrew Dalzell at AndrewD[at]southofsouth.org if you're interested in getting involved - please include "Global Green" in the subject heading.
