SOSNA Featured Businesses

In an effort to inform all neighbors about the wonderful locally-owned businesses we have right here in our neighborhood, we are happy to introduce the "SOSNA FEATURED BUSINESS" page, and portion of our regular email blasts.  We invite any and all business owners in our neighborhood (South to Washington; Broad to the Schuylkill River) to submit blurbs like the one below for SOSNA to disseminate to neighbors.  Questions? Our business has been open since 1997 and we like having "the best of both one location" (our motto). We serve traditional Mediterranean dishes as well as American cuisine (pizza, cheesesteaks, wings). Our Middle Eastern dishes are 100% Halal and we take pride in knowing we serve fresh and HEALTHY meals. We use zero transfat oil and we use only 100% beef products. We also make our dough and sauce ON PREMISE daily to ensure freshness.

I'd like to have our customers feel at home at our restaurant. That's important to me. I'd also like to be involved in any improvement to the neighborhood as well. I'm enthusiastic for any new ideas and renovation. I hope this is helpful. Thank you so much for your time. Below is our information.

Thanks again,

April 6, 2011:  OCF Coffee House, 1745 South Street

1745 South Street
GRAND OPENING: Friday April 8th from 4:00 - 8:00 PM
Regular Hours (starting Saturday April 9th): Monday-Friday: 6:30 AM - 10:00 PM; Saturday: 7:30 AM - 9:00 PM; Sunday: 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM

We like to think of ourselves as a real estate outfit with a coffee habit; a good, healthy habit at that. Since our inception in January of 2008 in the Graduate Hospital area, we have had our hand in seeing the neighborhood around us become a vibrant corridor of homes and commerce. We are always looking for ways to become a larger part of this burgeoning community, and recently, we got just the chance we were looking for when we opened up a coffee shop. The new OCF Coffee House at 1745 South Street is a place where our knowledge of the real estate industry can be poured into the same cup with our love of coffee.

The concept to meld our two specialties came to us as a way that we could become a more helpful and integral part of the Graduate Hospital community. We like the idea of being able to provide a venue for our neighbors to come and enjoy a cup of coffee while also being able to see what was going on in the real estate market around them in an informative and obliging setting. The coffee shop will be a place where you can enjoy an espresso and a healthy snack while perusing our interactive wall of properties for sale across the city. If you see something you like, we have agents who will be able to meet and assist you in a matter of minutes.

By making this a versatile hub of the community, we hope to be as helpful to the people around us as they have been to us.

As part of our thank you to the neighborhood in which we live and work, all proceeds from our opening party this Friday, April 8th from 4:00PM to 8:00PM will be donated to the South of South Neighborhood Association. We will open this Friday at 4:00PM and stay open as late as the community wishes to enjoy each other's company.

Regular hours of operation will begin Saturday with the following schedule: Mon-Fri, 6:30AM-10:00PM, Saturday, 7:30AM-9:00PM, and Sunday 8:00AM-9:00PM.

We will look forward to seeing you Friday!

Warmest regards,

The OCF Team

March 29, 2011:  Raja Yoga, 724 South 20th Street (at Fitzwater)

724 South 20th Street (at Fitzwater)

Raja Yoga of Philadelphia opened last June at 20th and Fitzwater, in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood, right across from the Beauty Shop Cafe. The neighborhood has been welcoming and supportive, and the studio has grown considerably. The mission of Raja Yoga is to make yoga accessible to everyone by customizing the practice to truly work for all levels, especially beginners, and by creating a warm and welcoming space where people can look forward to coming. The studio has a cozy feel, in contrast to larger studios or gym classes, and the instructors lavish personal attention on you. Raja Yoga is also deeply invested in the well-being of the neighborhood and has worked with SOSNA so far to both plant more sidewalk trees and install Big Belly recycling and solar trash compactors.

Hatha and Vinyasa classes are offered, as well as specialty classes such as meditation and "Mommy and Me" both hard to find in the city. Yoga offers something that other forms of exercise do not, a mental component which helps you deepen the connection between your mind and body, and gives you some powerful tools for self-improvement and transformation. Classes are offered seven days a week, see the website for details.

Raja Yoga is offering a 200 hour, part time teacher training program which will begin in May, and runs approximately every 6 months. Whether your goal is to become a full time yoga teacher, just teach one class a week for fun, or study purely to deepen your own practice and have an enriching life experience, this program will meet and exceed your needs.  It will also be loads of fun! contact Wes for more information.

March 21, 2011: South Bridge Bed & Breakfast, 2628 South Street

South Bridge Bed & Breakfast
2628 South Street
Listings and reviews here.

From founder and owner Chelle Greenfield:

I purchased the property at 2628 South Street in 1997, the second owner of this house.  In the summer of 2008, a chance meeting with the proprietor of a bed and breakfast in the Fairmount area, inspired and convinced me to do the same. I could continue to take care of people (I used to be a Licensed Clinical Psychologist) by giving them a comfortable night's sleep and a delicious breakfast in the morning. Construction was started in October, 2008, and everything was completed by January, 2010. I was listed with Bed and Breakfast Connection of Philadelphia in March, and later at So far, my demographic seems pretty evenly divided between the University of Pennsylvania/HUP and the friends and families of residents of the neighborhood.
A small percentage are tourists and business people.

Check out my listing at for pictures, rates, and a full description of the accommodations.

All neighborhood friends and family will receive a 10% discount off all rates if they call me directly instead of booking online!

Philly Dance Fitness
Offering dance fitness classes in Graduate Hospital and other locations throughout Philadelphia.

Been a little lax on the New Year's resolutions to stay more active? You don't have to travel far to fix that.  Aside from gyms, our neighborhood is home to an independent dance fitness company with high-energy classes that feel more like dance parties than workouts.

Owner Deborah Hirsch started her first Philly Dance Fitness class at the Marian Anderson Center in April 2010, just a few months after moving into the neighborhood. In July, she organized a city-wide Philadelphia Dance Day, bringing together six other local dance studios and teachers to offer free classes throughout Graduate Hospital and Rittenhouse Square. Building on the success of those community classes and events, Philly Dance Fitness has since expanded to other parts of the city.

In addition to Zumba, a program that fuses international rhythms with easy to follow steps, Philly Dance Fitness instructors offer hip hop, cardio bellydance, striptease aerobics and PiYo. All of these classes are designed to be accessible to anyone - regardless of dance experience - and no membership is required. A full class schedule is available at
