Earth Day Tree Plantings

SOSNA Headquarters 1901 Christian Street
Philadelphia, PA 19146

We welcome neighbors to help our team of volunteers plant trees on the morning of Earth Day, Saturday April 22, 2017. It's fun and neighborly -- and we'll teach you how!

We'll be meeting at the SOSNA Office (1901 Christian Street) to organize into groups before heading out to green the neighborhood!

During this planting cycle, we will be planting ten trees with a special emphasis on the 1000 block of South Colorado Street.

Tree recipients: If you are able, please help with the tree planting for your house. Folks who invest effort in helping with the planting of their tree form a bond with their tree and are more likely to continue to care for them in the years down the road. At a minimum, we ask that you make at least twenty gallons of water available for our team when they arrive that morning, by way of access to a spigot or by providing buckets.

Tree planting volunteers, please RSVP here and bring any of the following that you might have:
  • gardening gloves;
  • filled reusable water bottle (please don't kill our green mojo with disposable water bottles!);
  • spade (preferable) or flat head shovel;
  • axe
  • coarse broom
  • wheel barrow or other handy pull cart
  • stake driver

Want to lead a planting team? We employ an array of techniques to properly plant bare root trees, to give them the best chance of survival in the urban environment. To learn from PHS' finest, please attend the Bare Root Planting Leader training, Thursday, April 13th from, 6:00 – 7:30 pm at PHS (5th Floor) and RSVP to Mindy Maslin at As always, the more helping hands, the lighter the load for all! Lastly, past tree recipients (don't forget to water your trees!) Are your neighbors green with envy at your new street tree? Is your tree lonely? If so, please forward this link to your neighbors which includes the online application for a street tree to be planted during the Fall 2017 cycle. I ask for this application to be submitted by April 25th. Help further green up your block!
