Our neighborhood is blessed with many fantastic organizations that strengthen our ties to each other, our neighborhood, and our culture.  Many have great ways to get involved, or avail yourself of their services.  Check them out below:

  • Art Sanctuary - 628 South 16th Street (at Bainbridge): www.artsanctuary.org. Art Sanctuary uses the power of black art to transform individuals, create and build community and foster cultural understanding.
    • Sanctuary LIVE! Each 3rd Friday of the month at 7 PM - with a lineup boasting the very best in emerging talent from Philadelphia and beyond.
    • Storytelling Circle for Children Each 1st Friday of the month at 10 AM until June 2014 - We invite preschool age children and their grown-ups for story time with the area’s finest griots. Our veteran storytellers use folklore, oral traditions, music, dance and movement to share beautiful, heart-felt and engaging stories.
    • In the Gallery Program - a rotating exhibit of local, national, and international visual artists in the black community.

  • Brandywine Workshop - 730 South Broad Street: brandywineworkshop.com. Brandywine's mission is to be a major force in the creation, documentation and preservation of culturally diverse American art and insuring the participation of multiethnic artists in the field of fine art printmaking and related media technologies.
    • Prints 4 Sale - Purchase amazing print work from artists working in the Workshop.
    • Printmaking Studios - The heart of Brandywine Workshop’s activities lie in the Printmaking Studios, which serves as the actual workshop for Brandywine’s artists-in Residence.
  • Mighty Writers - 1501 Christian Street: www.mightywriters.org The mission of Mighty Writers is to teach Philadelphia kids (ages 7 to 17) to think and write with clarity so they can achieve success at school, at work and in life. All programs are free to Philadelphia students.
    • Daily afterschool Academy - The Mighty Writers Academy in South Philadelphia, limited to 35 students in grades 3-8, runs from 3:00 to 6:00pm Monday through Thursday during the school year.  New student applications are accepted annually from May 1 to July 1 for consideration the following school year.     • Long- and short-term writing classes at night and on the weekends.
    • Mighty Teen Scholars program - Our Mighty Teen Scholars program, for Philly students in grades 9-12, meets at Mighty Writers from 6 to 8pm every Wednesday.  The Teen Scholars writing program is built on critical thinking, dynamic discussions and achievement.     • Mentorships - Time: Monday through Thursday, 6-8pm and Sunday afternoons. Commitment: 90 minutes per week for six months, Requirements:
      • Bachelor’s degree and two years of work experience, preferably in a field related to writing.
      • Strong listening and communication skills when working with young people.
      • A willingness to establish a relationship with a young person based on mutual understanding and respect.
    • Training: New mentors are required to attend an orientation session with our youth coordinator. Orientation sessions are held throughout the year.
