Zoning Committee
ZONING COMMITTEE SELF-NOMINATIONS: DUE AUGUST 23, 2010
Dear Neighbor:
The SOSNA Zoning Committee is seeking interested individuals to serve as committee members and as alternates. Alternates have the same responsibilities as committee members but sit on committee meetings only when full members are absent.
The SOSNA Zoning Committee is responsible for reviewing applications from developers and individuals seeking zoning variances from the Zoning Board of Adjustment. The committee meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 6:00 -10:00 pm to review the applications, including a public portion of the meeting where applicants and members of the community testify. All zoning committee members are required to attend these meetings with only exceptional absences. Members are also expected to familiarize themselves with the applications on-line during the week prior to the meeting. Finally, members are encouraged but not required to participate in Zoning Workgroup committee meetings on the first Wednesday evening of each month.
There are no formal qualifications for Zoning Committee membership other than a genuine interest in zoning and development issues, a desire to support the neighborhood and the ability to contribute the required time and attention. However, a background in architecture, construction, engineering, real estate or related fields, or prior experience on a planning or zoning committee is helpful. Please also indicate your interest in joining the Zoning Workgroup if you are not selected this year.
If you are interested in serving on the Zoning Committee, please submit a letter briefly describing your interest and qualifications by Monday, August 23 to Andy Dalzell at the SOSNA office via e-mail to sosnazoningcommittee@gmail.com. Please understand that submission is not a guarantee of being selected, as many qualified individuals might apply. However, all submissions will be considered by the SOSNA Board with selections made late in August and committee terms beginning on Wednesday evening, September 15th.
For additional information, please visit http://www.southofsouth.org/?q=zoning or contact Andy Dalzell at the SOSNA Office, 1901 Christian Street; phone: (215) 732-8446
The SOSNA Zoning Committee was established by the SOSNA Board of Directors to provide a public forum for input on zoning issues within the SOSNA area. The Philadelphia Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) typically seeks input from neighborhood associations like SOSNA for comment on requests for zoning variances. The SOSNA Zoning Committee looks to you. We hold monthly meetings to discuss all applications for zoning variances within the SOSNA boundary area. Zoning Committee Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. See the Calendar of Events for upcoming meeting dates. You are invited to attend and participate in these meetings.

The SOSNA Office (1901 Christian Street) is open Monday-Thursday, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM.
The Zoning Committee requests that applicants use the following formula to determine the configuration of a roof deck.
The Deck Setback is determined by 4 multiplied by the right of way width of the street minus ½ the opposite sidewalk width, divided by the height of the building minus 5.5.
or: S = 4* (ROW-½SIDEWALK) / (H – 5.5)
Please call the SOSNA Office (215 732-8446) for assistance with this calculation. We have an easy calculator we can send you.
