Schools

SOSNA is a dedicated partner with all the schools in the neighborhood.  The vitality of our local schools is as integral to the long-term vitality of this neighborhood as any one element of the urban fabric.  We encourage all neighbors to learn more about them, volunteer there, send your children there, and be robust community partners with them.

CATCHMENT SCHOOLS

What is a catchment area? A catchment area is a boundary.  Neighbors who reside within that boundary are eligible to send their children to the designated catchment school, and will receive priority admission because they live in that area.

In what catchment do I live?  Check out the PDF map below, or visit the City of Philadelphia's map, accessible here.  Under "SERVICE AREA" at the top left, select "SCHOOL CATCHMENTS" from the drop-down menu, and zoom the map into your area.

Residents of this neighborhood live in one of three catchment areas, though only two of the catchment schools are based in the neighborhood itself.  The three catchment schools are:

  1. Albert M. Greenfield School - K-8 - 22nd and Chestnut Streets - website.
  2. C.A. Arthur School - K-8 - 20th and Catharine Streets - website.
  3. E.M. Stanton School - K-8 - 17th and Christian Streets - website.

CHARTER SCHOOLS:

What is a charter school? Charter schools receive public funds (and private investment, too) but are not bound to any certain geographic area.  Students choose to apply and there is in some cases a very competitive process to be admitted into these charter schools.

There are three charter schools located in or just outside of this neighborhood.  These three charter schools are:

  1. Independence Charter School - K-8 - 16th and Lombard Streets - website.
  2. Universal Institute Charter School - K-8 (expanding soon) - 15th and Catharine Streets - website.
  3. World Communications Charter School - 9-12 - Broad and South Streets - website.

SOSNA SCHOOLS COMMITTEE:

SOSNA is investigating the possibility and feasibility of establishing a Schools Committee to organize the cooperative efforts between schools and the surrounding community.  If you are interested in participating, please contact the SOSNA office at 215 732-8446 or by email to AndrewD AT southofsouth DOT org
