Clean & Green Committee

COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON:  MARK SCOTT

THIS JUST IN: AS OF AUGUST 1st, 2010 THE CITY IS NOW PICKING UP PLASTICS #3-#7!!! LEARN MORE ABOUT IT AT THE STREETS DEPARTMENT WEBSITE.

RECYCLE YOUR PLASTIC BAGS AT THE SOSNA OFFICE!
! Tired of saving your old newspaper bags? Forget to bring them to the grocery store? Swing by 1901 Christian Street and recycle them at a convenient, central location.  Bring them by anytime during office hours - Monday: 9-7; Tuesday - Thursday: 9-4; Friday: CLOSED.

Clean, walkable, tree-lined streets, with public-open space and quality schools are the makings of a great neighborhood. The Clean & Green Committee has identified key areas important to creating and maintaining a pleasant, quality neighborhood. They cover trash/blight, walkability, parking, and open space.

Currently this committee interfaces with the City Planning Commission in their effort to improve walkability in Southwest Center City.  The committee is also working to determine the means to get our neighborhood cleaned up and to identify neighborhood features that could be improved to make our neighborhood safer.

SOSNA's Clean & Green Committee also supports PMBC's Clean Block clean-up events which are scheduled throughout the year in our (17th) District.

The Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee schedules its Clean Block events on Saturdays.

Some of the things you should know about Clean Block events:

  • All debris should be bagged and placed at either end of the block to facilitate collection.
  • No bulk or household trash will be collected during the Saturday Clean-up Program.
  • Do not sweep trash or dirt into inlets.
  • Streets should not be blocked off with parked cars during cleaning.

See http://www.phila.gov/streets/pmbc.html for more details.

Brooms & bags are always available for these events through the SOSNA office.  Phone (215) 732-8446 to arrange to get  supplies for your block.  First come, first served.

In addition, blocks (through your Block Captain, if you have one) may contact our PMBC Clean Block Officer directly for supplies at least three (3) weeks in advance of the listed cleaning dates. Our Clean Block Officer is Bill Stern at 215-685-3989.  (NOTE:  If your block doesn't have a PMBC Block Captain, let Bill know & ask him how to volunteer to be one.)
